Hannah Gadsby is a comedian who received her own Netflix special by the name of Nanette. She is a lesbian with a strong stage presence and as opposed to other comedians, Gadsby uses her position to discuss social issues such as homophobia and the unfair treatment she has received from cis straight males in her hometown of Tasmania. Her comedy show starts out lighthearted with laughs and then towards the ends gets much more serious where she goes into detail about her experience with assault, rape, and sexual abuse from her childhood. These themes are not something you often see in comedy. When you think of comedy you don’t think of strong harsh themes, you think of lighthearted ones which in some case may offend some people but for the most part, tend to simply be jokes that you could tell to a friend on a late Friday night. As I was watching the show, I felt emotionally connected to her. What had started out as a lighthearted show had quickly turned into something much more than just a way to get a few laughs. I don’t know her personally but after watching it I felt as if I could relate to her story as a woman. Gadsby and Sedwick’s stories connected because they both discussed how between two men, the relationship is seen as sexualized, however between two women, both are assumed to be straight. Gadsby further goes into this in her story where she talks about a man getting angry at her for attempting to steal his girl however, the man originally thought she was a male and when he realized that she was a  woman, the man backed off. People should not assume others sexuality and instead just mind their business.
